About
Vinod Bhardwaj (born 1961, Kotgarh, Himachal Pradesh) is a distinguished writer, editor, and chronicler of Himachal’s social, cultural, and historical life. A lifelong lover of nature, photography, and horticulture, his work reflects a deep and enduring connection to the landscapes and communities of the Himalayan region.
He completed his schooling in Rajgarh (Sirmaur) and Shimla, and went on to earn an LL.B. and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from Himachal Pradesh University. In 1989, he joined the Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of Himachal Pradesh, where he served with distinction for over three decades, retiring as Senior Editor.
During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping key government publications, including Giriraj and Himprastha. As Editor and Senior Editor, he conceptualized and produced several landmark special issues documenting the state’s history, culture, and development. These included editions on Fifty Years of Indian Independence, Sardar Sobha Singh’s Birth Centenary, Fairs and Festivals of Himachal Pradesh, 150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi, and comprehensive district-focused issues on Mandi, Kullu, Una, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Solan.
Through hundreds of articles, features, brochures, booklets, and research-based publications, he has consistently illuminated Himachal Pradesh’s developmental journey, social transformations, and cultural heritage.
In recognition of his contribution, he was honored by the Baghati Cultural Society, Solan, in 2018 for his special issue on Solan district, highlighting its rich history, cultural traditions, and socio-economic life.
He is the author of Gandhi in Simla, a meticulously researched account of Mahatma Gandhi’s association with Shimla between 1921 and 1946 during India’s freedom struggle. In 2025, he published From Samuel to Satyanand Stokes, documenting the life and legacy of the American pioneer who transformed the hill economy by introducing Delicious apple cultivation.
Through his writing and research, Vinod Bhardwaj has made lasting contributions to the understanding of the region’s freedom movement, educational development, labour reforms, and rural transformation. His work stands as a valuable archive of Himachal Pradesh’s evolving identity and collective memory.
