Prof. S. Radhakrishnan the then President of India ( 1962-1967) inaugurated Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS)on October 20,1965 at Simla (later Shimla). In his inaugural address, Dr. Radhakrishnan emphasised the importance of questioning established truths and not being prisoners of the status quo.

The Viceregal Lodge , built between 1880 and 1888 for Lord Duffrin served as summer residence of the British Viceroy from 1888 to 1947. After Independence Government of India inherited two very different viceregal homes in Simla Hills Viceregal Lodge ie Rashtrapati Niwas at Observatory Hill and the Retreat at Mashobra. Before 1888 Peterhoff was the residence of Viceroy. The Viceroy Lodge came to be associated with many an important events which changed the history and geography of the sub-continent. As early as 1900, the Punjab Alienation of Land Act was passed in the Governor General’s Council in the Viceregal Lodge.

A HERITAGE BURIED UNDER SAND

In the Imperial period the Europeans living in Simla ( later Shimla)and visitors coming from abroad preferred to explore the countryside. They surveyed the entire Western Himalayas, documented the history ,culture and heritage which became the base line information for future research projects. The beautiful places nearer to Simla are their favourite camping sites. During summers they preferred to visit via Naldera to Suni on to the banks of Sutlej, where the traveller can see the head-works of the electric supply station at Chaba, float down the Sutlej on ‘musacks’ or inflated buffalo skins, and bathe, in the wonderful sulphur springs on the river bank at Tattapani an ancient religious place.

आर्थिक संकट में हिमाचल सरकार के

नवाबी शौक!

हाल ही में हिमाचल के वित्त सचिव का ख़ुलासा कि ‘प्रदेश घोर आर्थिक संकट से गुज़र रहा है’, इस मुद्दे ने हर जगह एक बहस छेड़ दी है। हिमाचल के इतिहास में पहली दफ़ा हुआ जब एक उच्च अधिकारी ने वित्तीय संकट का ख़ुलासा किया। चाय से लेकर नाई की दुकान, कार्यालयों व राजनैतिक गलियारों तक सब इस मुद्दे पर चर्चा करते नज़र आ रहे हैं। जब सरकार राज्य की इस स्थिति से वाक़िफ़ थी तो वित्त सचिव की प्रेजेन्टेशन हास्यास्पद लगती है। राज्य की सरकार व सरकारी अमरबेलें आर्थिक स्थिति जानते हुए भी अपनी मौजमस्ती के लिए क़र्ज़ लेकर घी पीती रही हैं। सभी प्रदेशवासी सच्चाई जानते हैं लेकिन यहां के भोले भाले लोग कुछ बोलते नहीं हैं। तीन साल से सरकारी ख़ज़ाने पर ऐश कर रही सरकार व उनके मित्र-मंडली के अब जनता के सामने घड़ियाली आँसू क्यों निकले, यह विचारणीय प्रश्न है? मीडिया में दिए जा रहे बयानों से अभी आम जन-मानस को डराकर ऐसा माहौल बनाया जा रहा है कि सैलरी, पेंशन व डी ए बंद हो जाएगा। रोज़गार नहीं मिलेगा। लेकिन लोकतंत्र के राजाओं ; नेताओं व अधिकारियों की मिलीभगत से उनकी ऐश यथावत बनी रहेगी।

शिमला काफ़ी हाउस का भागीरथ

शिमला ने अंग्रेज़ों से लेकर आज तक इतिहास को बनते व बदलते देखा है । यहां का मालरोड इसका गवाह व साक्षी रहा है। अंग्रेज़ों के ज़माने से माल पर चहलक़दमी करना और यहाँ के रेस्टोरेंट में बैठना और बतियाना शिमला शहर की संस्कृति व परम्परा का अहम हिस्सा रहा है ।हाल ही के वर्षों में शिमला के माल रोड का परिदृश्य तो कुछ बदला है लेकिन यहां के निवासियों का टहलना व रेस्टोरेंट में बैठना बिलकुल भी बदला नहीं है। नौकरी पेशे बाले तो अमूमन शाम को ही रेस्टोरेंट में बैठना पसंद करते हैं लेकिन हाल ही के वर्षों में शिमला रिटायर कर्मियों का शहर बन गया है । बालजीज रेस्टोरेंट के बंद होने के बाद सभी के मिलने का अड्डा शिमला का एल्फा , आशियाना या कॉफ़ी हाउस ही है। कॉफ़ी हाउस की सबसे बड़ी ख़ूबी है ,इसने शिमला वासियों व जनपद के निवासियों को वर्ष 1957 से कॉफ़ी का स्वाद चखाया ही नहीं बल्कि ये उनका पसंदीदा पेय बन गया वही संवाद का मुख्य केंद्र भी बना। रोज़ माल पर घूमने वालों में काफ़ी की लत इस कदर है कि कुछ वक़्त माल पर टहलने के बाद कदम काफ़ी हाउस की ओर स्वयं ही उठाते हैं।

Born on February 2, 1889, to the royal family of Kapurthala, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the Princess of Kapurthala, had her early education in Sherborne School for Girls in Dorset, England, and her college education at Oxford University. She was raised a Christian. She had a landed property, “Manorville “in Summerhill, Simla (Shimla).
